An increasing number of children are obese, and if no intervention is made, 80% of them will stay overweight as adults. This can put them at risk for many medical problems, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and sleep apnea. Obesity can also adversely affect their self-esteem.
An important way to help your child with weight loss, maintaining a normal weight and develop healthy habits is to encourage him to participate in regular physical activity. This can include participating in a physical education class in school or extracurricular sports at school or in the community.

Exercising smart is always a good tool
Set a goal and break it down. For example, if you’re planning a long hiking trip, you might start by walking three miles a day for the first two weeks, gradually building up to 10 miles a day by the end of 10 weeks.
- Be sure to cross-train. It reduces the risk of over training, helps avoid injury, enhances muscle performance and helps prevent boredom.
- Work out with others. Sharing a spirit of competition and encouragement will help keep your motivation at a high level. You’ll also gain training benefits from working out with others with different levels of ability.
- Think of people who can help you achieve your goal, such as a trainer, nutritionist, physical therapist or physician. There are many different sources of help and you can select the one that works best for you.
While it’s impossible for most people to devote as much time to training as an Olympian does, you can approach the workout time you do have with the single-minded focus of a world-class athlete.
“Train for a couple of weeks with focus and discipline and lo and behold, you’ll be surprised by what you can do,
Anyone can experience the sense of achievement and pride that comes from striving to improve on their personal best.
“It’s been said that running a marathon is now everyman’s Everest. But that’s true for every sport. You can train for the Sunday night bowling league, if that’s your passion. The bowling championship may be your Olympics,” Sebelski said.
“Regardless of the scale of your goal, you should have the experience, at least once, of training for and accomplishing a physical goal you set for yourself. Crossing that finish line is a feeling unlike any other

When you’re sweating through an intense workout, you probably reach for a sports drink to quench your thirst. Millions of hardcore athletes and casual fitness fans chug sports beverages to replenish the water, sodium and glucose the body needs to maximize muscle function and speed up post-workout recovery.
For most of us, however, sports drinks are more about convenience than necessity, says Boston dietitian Nancy Clark, author of “Nancy Clark’s Sports Nutrition Guidebook.”
“The average person is not working out hard enough to need the rapid refueling these drinks offer,” says Clark, who advises amateur and professional athletes.
Still, if plain old water isn’t appealing, it’s good to know which sports drink is right for you. While there are dozens of exercise drinks available, the ingredients in most of them are pretty similar – water, carbohydrates (sugar), sodium and potassium. Childhood obesity or excess weight threatens the healthy future of one third of American children. We spend $150 billion every year to treat obesity-related conditions, and that number is growing.
Obesity rates tripled in the past 30 years, a trend that means, for the first time in our history, American children may face a shorter expected lifespan than their parents.
We need to get moving. Join First Lady Michelle Obama, community leaders, teachers, doctors, nurses, moms and dads in a nationwide campaign to tackle the challenge of childhood obesity.
Let’s Move! has an ambitious but important goal: to solve the epidemic of childhood obesity within a generation.

Do you know where your carrots, potatoes, oranges and tomatoes have been? Unless your fruits and vegetables are organic, most likely they were produce in a field covered in pesticides and herbicides. Although the pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables are considered to be controlled at safe levels for human intake, I don’t want those chemicals in my body, do you?

Most fruits and vegetables are handled by several different pairs of hands in the fields, then in the warehouses, and finally again in the grocery store. Be aware that bacteria such as Listeria, Salmonella and E. Coli may be lurking on your fruits and vegetables, whether they are organically grown or conventionally grown. All of these bacteria can cause food- borne illness.
How to Wash Your Fruits and Vegetables Tips:
1) Begin by keeping your cooking area (kitchen top), refrigerator, cookware and cutlery clean.
2) Always wash your hands before preparing meals and handling fruits and vegetables.
3) Keep fresh greens, fruits and vegetables away from uncooked meats to avoid cross-contamination.
4) Avoid bruised, moldy and mushy produce.
5) Wait until just before you eat or prepare your fruits and vegetables to wash them.
**Fruits and vegetables have natural coatings that keep moisture inside, so washing them can make them spoil sooner.
6) Wash all pre-packaged fruits and vegetables, even if it is labeled pre-washed.
7) Wash all parts of your fruits and vegetables, even if you don’t plan on eating them. Bacteria can live on the rind of an orange or the skin of a cucumber, for example. Though you may peel them away and toss them in the trash, the bacteria can be transferred from the outside of the fruit or vegetable to the knife you use to cut them, and then onto the parts you will be eating.
**Gently rub fruits and vegetables under running water. No need to use any soaps, detergents, bleaches or other toxic cleaning chemicals. These chemicals will leave a residue of their own on your produce.

Are you eating the right vegetables and fruits to help prevent contacting any virus this upcoming cold and flu season? Try to incorporate vegetables into your daily diet and add fresh fruits to your breakfast.
According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, cardiovascular disease and cancer rank as the leading causes of death in the U.S. and in most industrialized countries. Eating fresh fruit and vegetables regularly is associated with reduced risks of cancer, cardiovascular disease, stroke, Alzheimer disease, cataracts, and some of the common problems linked with aging. The journal also states that prevention is more effective than treating these types of chronic disease.
